初疑夜雨忽朝晴，乃是山泉终夜鸣。
译文：夜宿山寺，夜半听见水声，误为下雨了，待清晨起来出门一看，才发现天空晴朗，原来昨夜的声音并非雨声，而是急湍而下的山泉发出的声音，终夜响个不停。
流到前溪无半语，在山做得许多声。
译文：顺流而行，发现山泉在半山坡流下时叮咚作响，流入山下溪水后，由于水路宽平，就不再像在山里那样因水流曲折而发出冲激的声音。
注释：“流到”二句：指前溪水深面阔，不像在山里因曲折而易致冲激作声。唐杜甫《佳人》诗：“在山泉水清，出山泉水浊。”与此诗含意相近。后人因把“在山”、“出山”比喻在野、在朝。
