元明间苏州府嘉定人，先世东蜀人，字常宗，号妫蜼子。少孤贫，读书天台山中，师事王贞文，得兰溪金履祥之传。洪武初以布衣召修《元史》，荐入翰林。乞归后，常为知府魏观作文，观得罪，连坐死。曾著论力诋杨廉夫，以为文妖。有《三近斋稿》、《王常宗集》。
