号南涧翁、烟霞病叟，成化十九年（1483）乡试解元，成化二十年（1484）成三甲进士，历吏科给事中、工科都给事中，因涉唐寅考场舞弊案，被贬海州判官，弘治十六年（1503）升任湖南茶陵知州，倡建洣江书院，聚生徒讲解儒家经典，风雨无阻，寒署不辍。正德十三年（1518）八月，福州士兵因索饷哗变，因士兵怨左布政使 伍符裁省月粮。廷玉与副使高文达出面劝解得缓。后因御史董建中劾其拗执褊刻，乞归，家居二十年，著述自娱。嘉靖十一年（1532）病逝，终年78岁。有《南涧文录》。
