但欲掩昏旦，遂复经圆缺。
扪壁窥龙池，攀枝瞰乳穴。
积峡忽复启，平途俄已绝。
峦垅有合沓，往来无踪辙。
登庐山绝顶望诸峤鉴赏
此诗是作者登上庐山最高峰眺望四野山道时抒怀。好山泽之游的谢灵运，来到庐山，并登上“绝顶”，实现了夙愿；放眼四顾，只见“积峡忽复启”、“峦垅有合沓”，这壮丽的自然景色使诗人感奋。
这诗引出了一个有趣的问题。明代钟惺、谭元春合编的《古诗归》，录有谢灵运这首《登庐山绝顶望诸峤》，只有六句：
积峡或复启，平涂俄已闭。峦陇有合沓，往来无踪辙。昼夜蔽日月，冬夏共霜雪。他们对这诗很是欣赏。钟云：“六句质奥，是一短记。”谭云：“他人数十句写来，必不能如此朴妙。”可是谢灵运的游览诗，绝没有这样寥寥数语的；《古诗归》所录，实是残缺不全的一个片断。至少，根据《文选》李善注等古籍记载，这诗前面还有六句：
山行非前期，弥远不能辍。但欲淹昏旦，遂复经盈缺。扪壁窥龙池，攀枝瞰乳穴。而且，按谢诗的一般习惯，在《古诗归》所录六句的后面，很可能还有许多句，只是不见记载罢了。总之，钟、谭二人拿残诗当完篇来评论，近乎盲人摸象。他们因此受到后人反复讥刺，这事情也变成文学批评史上一个有名的笑话。
可是，撇开学问不谈，人们是否注意到：这诗究竟是残缺的好，还是比较完整的好？至少，《古诗归》所录六句，作为一首诗看，除开头有些突兀，总体上是不错的，诗意集中，抓住了景物的特征。如果加上另外六句，就显得拖沓、累赘，节奏平缓无力。

谢灵运（385年－433年），东晋陈郡阳夏（今河南太康）人，出生在会稽始宁（今浙江上虞），原为陈郡谢氏士族。东晋名将谢玄之孙，小名“客”，人称谢客。又以袭封康乐公，称谢康公、谢康乐。著名山水诗人，主要创作活动在刘宋时代，中国文学史上山水诗派的开创者。由谢灵运始，山水诗乃成中国文学史上的一大流派，最著名的是《山居赋》，也是见诸史册的第一位大旅行家。谢灵运还兼通史学，工于书法，翻译佛经，曾奉诏撰《晋书》。《隋书·经籍志》、《晋书》录有《谢灵运集》等14种。
