译文
国亡家破之际我能到哪去呢？西子湖畔有我的榜样。（于谦和岳飞的墓都在西湖边)）
于忠肃（于谦）的功绩可与日月同辉，岳武穆曾经保住了宋朝半壁江山，朝廷给他在西湖边建了祠庙。
很惭愧我抗清复明大业未成，手无寸功，却想和这两位葬在一起。我凭借一颗赤诚之心，想在西子湖畔有一处我的安息之地。
以后有那么一天，在很多素车白马赶到浙东来向我吊丧的路上，东海将会掀起愤怒的狂涛，那狂涛难道是葬在鸱夷里的伍子胥所化的吗？
注释
日月句：日月，指明朝，也有光辉的意思。于氏，指于谦，见于谦《出塞》作者简介。
乾坤句：乾坤，天地。岳，指岳飞，见岳飞《送紫岩张先生北伐》作者简介。
赤手：空手。
借一枝：即借一枝栖，李义府《咏鸟》：“上林无限树，不借一枝栖”。
素车：素车白马，指送丧的行列。
怒涛句：鸱夷，革囊，《国语》：吴国忠臣申胥（伍子胥）死谏吴王，吴王不悦，“使取申胥之尸，盛以鸱夷而投之于江。”后人传说，伍子胥尸体投江之日，天也被激怒了，江潮特别汹涌，也有说怒潮是伍子胥的忠魂所化。

《甲辰八月辞故里》共两首，该诗为第二首。甲辰，指公元1664年（清康熙三年）。是年七月，张煌言在其隐居处南田悬岙岛 (今浙江象山县南) 被俘，押至鄞县；八月初，解往杭州。临近出发的时候，为张煌言送行的有几千人，张煌言辞别故乡父老，赴杭就义。临行慷慨写下此诗。

张煌言（1620—1664年），字玄著，号苍水，鄞县（今浙江宁波）人，汉族，南明儒将、诗人，著名抗清英雄。崇祯时举人，官至南明兵部尚书。后被俘，遭杀害，就义前，赋《绝命诗》一首。谥号忠烈。其诗文多是在战斗生涯里写成，质朴悲壮，表现出作家忧国忧民的爱国热情，有《张苍水集》行世。张煌言与岳飞、于谦并称“西湖三杰”。清国史馆为其立传，《明史》有传。1776年（乾隆四十一年）追谥忠烈，入祀忠义祠，收入《钦定胜朝殉节诸臣录》。
