译文
冬天的夜晚万籁静寂无声。已近五更时分被子却还是冰冰冷冷。炉中沉香已燃尽，灯光昏暗，孤冷凄清，这样的夜何时才是尽头。窗外也只有那结成的霜花伴着明月。
孤寂寒冷夜，想着那迎风绽放的梅花也是烦恼的无法入眠的。我在想着梅花而梅花也在念着我，互相牵挂着。起床时看到那玉瓶中的水已全都凝结成冰。

南乡子·冬夜鉴赏
黄升是一位著名的词选家，其词如“晴空冰柱”，今读此词，颇有此感。
上片写夜寒苦吟之景状。词人生在南宋中期，早年放弃科举，遯迹林泉，吟咏自适，填词是他精神生活中一个重要组成部分。从这首词看，即使夜阑人静之时，他还在苦吟不已。起二句云：“万籁寂无声，衾铁稜稜近五更。”夜，是静极了，一点动静也没有。只有深夜不睡的人，方能有此体会。“稜稜”二字，使人感到布衾硬得好像有稜角一般，难以贴体。至“香断灯昏吟未稳，凄清”二句，词人则把注意力从被窝移向室内：炉中沉香已尽，残灯如豆，昏暗异常，凄清异常。至“只有霜华伴月明”，词人又把注意力转向室外，描写了明月高悬、霜华遍地的景象。五句三个层次，娓娓写来，自然而又逼真。“吟未稳”者，吟诗尚未觅得韵律妥贴、词意工稳之句也，三字写出词人此时之所为，可称上片之词眼。由于“吟未稳”，故觉深夜寂静被子寒冷，香断灯昏；又由于“吟未稳”，才觉霜华伴月，碧空无边。而“凄清”二字，则烘托了本文的整个氛围，不贯穿整文，随处可以感到。由此可见，词的结构是井然有序、浑然一体的。
下片词人从自己的“吟未稳”联想到梅花的“睡不成”。冰寒大地，长夜无眠，词人居然不说自己感到烦恼，却为梅花设身处地着想，说它该是烦恼得睡不成了。此语奇警，设想绝妙。接下去二句说：“我念梅花花念我，关情。”此句点明不仅他在想着梅花，梅花也怜念起他来了。他们竟成为一对知心好友！
这种构思，确实是奇特异常；这种格调和意境，确实是空幻的。它非常形象地勾画了一个山中隐士清高飘逸的风采。它的妙处尤其表现在将梅花拟人化。
结句“起看清冰满玉瓶”，跟以上两句不可分割，互为联系，词中句断乃为韵律所限。因为词人关切寒夜中梅花，于是不顾自己冷暖，披衣而出，结果看到，玉瓶中的水已结成了冰。至于梅花呢，他在词中未提及，留给读者想象的空间。蕴意深远，饶有余味。如果词人在词中将梅花说尽了，说梅花冻得不成样子，或说梅花凌霜傲雪，屹立风中，那就一览无余，毫无诗意了。由此可见词人手法之高明。

黄升（生卒年不详）字叔旸，号玉林，又号花庵词客，建安（今属福建建瓯）人。不事科举，性喜吟咏。以诗受知于游九功，与魏庆之相酬唱。著有《散花庵词》，编有《绝妙词选》二十卷，分上下两部份，上部为《唐宋诸贤绝妙词选》，十卷；下部为《中兴以来绝妙词选》，十卷。附词大小传及评语，为宋人词选之善本。后人统称《花庵词选》。
