陇西人，著名隐士，与韩愈、卢仝为好友，因韩愈一篇《送李愿归盘谷序》使得此李愿盘谷声名鹊起。这也使得李愿为千古之谜，至今不知“李愿”何许人也，以及更多的信息？由于时代久远，史料不详，至今云山雾罩，扑朔迷离，历朝历代都进行考究。但是纠正了“李愿，西平忠武王李晟之子”的说法。清康熙年间，吴楚材、吴调侯编写的《古文观止》所选《送李愿归盘谷序》一文中，“友人李愿居之”句下有小字注曰：“李愿，西平忠武王李晟之子，归隐盘谷，号‘盘谷子’”。然而“李愿，李晟之子”这个说法并不可信———综合考察李晟、李愿、韩愈的史传资料，并无“李晟之子李愿”隐居盘谷的记载。
