南卓，字昭嗣，唐宣宗拾遗，洛阳令，黔南经略使，著有《羯鼓录》《唐朝纲领图》《唐纪年记》《驳史》《南卓文》等。他任洛阳令时，经常与著名诗人白居易、刘禹锡宴会游玩，谈起唐时传入中国的西域民族乐器羯鼓，白居易、刘禹锡便劝他写出来：“若吾友所谈，宜为文纪，不可令湮没也。”于是就成了《羯鼓录》。《羯鼓录》与《教坊记》一样，是研究唐代音乐艺术、宫廷生活和社会风气的重要典籍。南卓与著名诗人贾岛是好友。
