薛道光先曾出家为僧，法号紫贤，又号毗陵禅师。本参禅了得，为禅门所首肯。后云游长安，在开福寺修习禅法，顿悟“无上圆明真实法要”。据《陕西通志》载：宋徽宗崇宁五年(1106)冬，遇石泰，得授口诀真要。后至京师，弃佛入道。以金丹导养术着称，成为道教南五祖中第三代传人薛式(公元1078 - 1191) 名薛道光、又名薛道原，字太源。北宋时阆州(今四川阆中)人，一说为陕西鸡足山人。内丹名家，石泰嫡传弟子，为道教南宗第三代传人，道教称为“紫贤真人”，南五祖之三。。
