不自量力的典故

春秋时期，在如今河南省境内有两个诸侯国，一个是郑国，一是息国。公元前712年，息国向郑国发动了战争。

这两个诸侯国虽然都很小，但息国的人力与物力比郑国要少得多，军力也要弱得多。战争自然以息国的失败而告终。

事后，一些有见识的人分析出，息国快要灭亡了。他们分析的根据是，息国一不考虑自己的德行如何，二不估量自己的力量是否能取胜，三不同亲近的国家笼络好关系，四不把自己向郑国进攻的道理讲清楚，五不明辨失败的罪过和责任是谁。犯了这五条错误，还要出师征伐别国，结果遭到失败，这不是非常自然的吗？

果然，不久息国被楚国攻灭。
