南朝时期，天竺国和尚佑达摩（达摩老祖）到南朝梁首都建业同梁武帝萧衍谈佛家，话不投机就到嵩山少林寺住下，讲解《易筋经》，他整天整夜面对石洞的墙壁“壁观婆罗门”静坐，一句话不说，这样坚持了九年，一直到老死。
