春秋时期，孔子带领弟子周游列国，在卫、陈、蔡等国碰壁后，受到了楚国的邀请。陈国串通蔡国放出囚犯围堵孔子，那些囚犯闻风而动，将孔子师徒被围困很多天。孔子师徒断了粮，只有派子贡外出求援。听说楚军到来，囚犯们纷纷抱头鼠窜了。
