重蹈覆辙的典故

东汉时，桓帝宠幸宦官，导致宦官互相勾结，垄断朝政，陷害忠良。李膺和杜密等忠良大臣纠集太学生郭泰等人竭力铲除宦官。公元一六六年，宦官们在桓帝面前诬告李膺等人造反，桓帝听信馋言，下令把李膺等忠良大臣关进大牢，人数多达几百人，这就是历史上有名的“党锢之祸”。

当时，窦武的女儿是皇后，窦武受封为侯爵，他为人正直，从不仗势欺人。看到宦官的胡作非为，十分愤慨，上书对桓帝说：“如果再让宦官这样胡作非为下去，将会像秦朝二世一样，因为给庞臣太多的权力，导致庞臣造反作乱，最终失去江山，陛下可要吸取教训，千万别重蹈覆辙呀！”桓帝经过窦武提醒，体会到自己的错误，于是就放了李膺等人，结束了“党锢之祸”
