战国时期，孟子同他的学生万章谈起孔子十分厌恶“乡愿”，万章不明白乡愿是什么人。孟子说乡愿是乡里那些八面玲珑、惯于奉承讨好别人的老好人，也就是“好好先生”，他们“同乎流俗，合乎污世”，骨子里很坏，让人厌恶。
