基本解释《书·酒诰》：“古人有言曰：‘人无于水监，当于民监。’”于，以；监，通“鉴”，镜。《国语·吴语》：“王其盍亦鉴于人，无鉴于水。”韦昭注引《书》曰：“人无于水鉴，当于民鉴。”后以“以人为鉴”谓将别人的成败得失作为自己的鉴戒。
